My new backyard fishpond.

Doves have taken over my hanging basket.

There is something about standing here looking out at the tops of mountains. Miles and miles of near wilderness. I came to see the coal mines. And I did. But somehow, I see past all that. It is like when I'm relaxing in my yard in Louisville, KY. When leaves are on, if I position my easy chair just right, I can lay back and stare at the clouds and the sky and not see anything man made. On Black Mountain, it's easier. A quiet morning with no human sounds. In the distance a red-tail hawk screeching as it soars high over the peaks. Closer, a symphony of insect sounds, accompanied by a few crows calling and a couple of blue jays sassing my presence. But there is more. Something unexpected. The wind. It slips through trees, soft and sweet. Like every man that's ever stood in this exact same spot, listening...there's a whisper.
